Unit Topic: Story Elements
Subject: Language Arts/Writing
Approximate Time Required: 2 weeks
Main Purpose of Unit: The purpose of this unit is to acquaint students with the elements that make up a story. The three elements we will focus on are character, setting, and plot
Behavioral Objectives:
The student will be able to:
- Correctly differentiate between the three elements of a story
- Identify the five main characters in the book Civil War on Sunday through several activities.
- Describe the setting of the book, and be able to illustrate why the setting is so significant in a story.
- Identify the plot or problem and solution that appears in the book through classroom activities.
- Adequately summarize the book including the three elements of a story by completing classroom activities.
Content Outline:
- Three elements of a story including: Character - the main person or animal in a story, Setting - when and where the story takes place, and Plot - the action that occurs in a story or the problem that is solved.
- The five main characters in Civil War on Sunday are Jack, Annie, Clara, Johnny the drummer boy, and the soldier.
- After traveling back in time, this story takes place on a battlefield in Virginia, which is characteristic of a battle that occurred during the Civil War.
- The plot of this story is that Jack and Annie travel back in time to find a list of “something to do” as instructed. They find the list, but also have to fulfill it before returning to the Magic Tree House.
- In this book, Jack and Annie travel to a battle field of the Civil War, where they meet Clara Barton, a famous nurse during the war. They help her take care of soldiers, and fulfill the list of things they are to do when taking care of soldiers. After they are finished, they travel back to the Magic Tree House.
